Day Visit to IWM Duxford
Tuesday 29th April
The Friend’s have arranged a day visit to the famous Duxford aerodrome in Cambridgeshire, now part of the Imperial War Museum. The museum houses British civil and military aircraft which are on display both externally and internally.
From the early days of flight, through to the dramatic days of the Second World War and the technological advances of the Cold War, IWM Duxford has played a central role in some of the most significant periods of 20th-century history.
Inside every hangar and exhibition, you’ll discover iconic aircraft, see historic objects from their collections and uncover hundreds of personal stories of the many lives impacted by conflict.
As you explore the preserved airfield and buildings - many unchanged since the Second World War - you’ll be walking in the footsteps of the men and women who served here.
The Friends’ party will meet at Epping Underground station at 09:00 for a prompt 09:15 departure.
We will travel on an ex BEA Routemaster built in 1966, now completely refurbished to 'as new' standard, arriving at Duxford at around 10:00.
When we arrive, you will have the unique opportunity to take photos of the BEA Routemaster, alongside the Duxford BEA Trident Two. Please Note: These photos must be strictly for personal use only.
You will then be free to roam around the site throughout the day. AirSpace will be closed for essential conservation work but there is still plenty to see including the American Air Museum, Battle of Britain, Historic Duxford, Land Warfare, Air Sea and much more. Bring your walking shoes, Duxford is a big place!
Bring a picnic or visit one of the cafés (or both). We hope the weather will be kind for our visit though there is plenty to view under cover.
We will leave Duxford at 15:30 aiming to return to Epping at 16:30.
The cost for this visit from Epping Underground Station will be £43.00 per person.
