God's Wonderful Railway: Steam Tour Minehead

Mike Kay describes the first of two exceptional tours.

We have had many requests for a steam hauled rail tour, with top quality catering. Through the good offices of Kelly Osborne of the Railway Touring Company, we will be travelling on Saturday 10th August from Paddington to Minehead, steam hauled throughout.

You will be able to join the train at Paddington (0700), Slough (0730), Reading (0755) or Newbury (0845). Times in brackets are subject to confirmation. You will be traveling in our own dedicated First-Class coach, in one of the most comfortable heritage carriages BR ever built. On the outward journey, you will be served a light breakfast with a hot bacon cob, plus a selection of muffins and unlimited speciality teas and freshly roasted coffee.  On the return journey, you will enjoy a savoury afternoon tea, including freshly baked scones.  There will be a fully licenced bar available throughout your journey.

Your locomotive from Paddington to Bishops Lydeard and return will be LMS Jubilee Class Bahamas.

From Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and return you will travel behind a GWR Manor class locomotive.

Our route will take us through the Quantock Hills, with a view of the Wiltshire White Horse, Westbury, and Taunton after which we veer right, to join the single line West Somerset Railway at Norton Fitzwarren.  Our first stop is Bishops Lydeard, where you will have a chance to visit the Railway Shop, whilst they change the engines. We soon continue with the Bristol Channel on the right, as we pass through the coastal towns of Watchet and Blue Anchor; at Dunster, you will see the impressive castle. The station at Minehead is close to the front and you will have time to explore this interesting destination.

We return via the same route arriving at Paddington at 21.20
