Kingsbridge and a Devon Weekend
Mike Kay describes our second tour featuring the Kingsbridge vintage bus running day: a chance to see vehicles that rarely come out of their area, working on narrow roads, in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. You will participate in a recreation of a Devon General, Southern and Western National and Great Western Railway buses world: a visual festival for the photographer and a treat for the traveller.
This tour has been made possible by the good offices of Colin Billington, the event organiser, who has arranged a VIP visit for Friends.
On Friday 20th September, we travel on a direct train from Paddington to Torquay. Departure around 09.00. Two nights Dinner, Bed and Breakfast are included at the superb Grand Hotel adjacent to Torquay Station. Don’t forget to visit the superb indoor pool. Single, Twin and Double Rooms are available.
On Saturday 21st, after an early breakfast, we depart on a heritage bus to Kingsbridge. On arrival, Colin has arranged for Friends to travel on the most interesting local route over the narrowest of roads, on two heritage 7’6” wide single-deckers. Friends are then free to enjoy the many other unique and scenic bus routes. You will have a free pass and timetable and guide book. The London Transport Museum Friends will be making a contribution to the event’s charity and donating a number of prizes.
We return Transfer to the Grand Hotel for dinner, after which there will be a presentation by the Devon General Omnibus Trust.
On Sunday 22nd, there is an 09.00 departure from hotel on a preserved Devon General double-decker. We make our way via Exeter to the Tiverton Canal Company, where we join Horse Drawn Barge ‘Tivertonian’ and Shire Horse Brindley. Coffee and biscuits will be served on embarkation for our cruise on this nine-mile canal, which was built to transport china clay. On our return, we transfer to a restaurant for a roast lunch. We then depart for Tiverton Parkway, with a return arrival at Paddington about 19:00.
