This will be a different class of tour, in which we want to remind you of, and let you experience, all the atmosphere of riding what was, in its heyday, London Transport Country Area's most prestigious service: ‘The Green Line’. This has only been possible by the good offices of Roger Wright and Wesley Tierney. The journey we will recreate is the 715 from Hertford to Guildford. You can trace the service right back to the 1930s; after sterling RF service over many years, it was the first route to be allocated one of the new batch of 68 RMCs in August 1962.

The longer RCL arrived at Hertford Garage in 1965. By then, with more cars on the road and cheaper fares for the commuter from British Railways, and the launch of the new Victoria Line, LT withdrew the service in the 1970s, saying in a press release: “that this long route was no longer commercially viable”.

In its time, the Green Line network offered one of the most reliable and comfortable express bus services in the UK, with the highest level of schedule integrity. You will be able to have the pleasure of traveling on board CRL 4, part of the Routemaster development fleet and an experimental design vehicle for Green Line services (albeit supplied without power steering).

Departing:      Hertford East Station 0930 or Wood Green Underground South Side bus stop 1040

Route:             715 Hertford to Guilford

 

Due to the length of journey and drivers’ hours limittaions, the return travel will be by train to Waterloo, cost included.

There will be a uniformed conductor with a Setright ticket machine and a chance that we will be boarded by a Green Line Inspector for a ticket check. There will also be a Green Line driver on board, who operated the route, to answer your questions. There will be refreshment and photo stops on the route.
