Recreating Routes 464,465 and 485
Tuesday 23rd September 2025
Mike Kay and ATTC invite Friends to join another Country Bus routes tour.
John Kateley, a former Trustee of the London Transport Museum Friends, and Ray Stenning of Best Impressions will lead and guide this route recreation tour organised by ATTC; this time we travel south of the River Thames to Kent and Surrey.
We will be travelling over former London Transport (and its successor London Country Bus Services) bus routes 464, 465 and 485 which served Oxted, Westerham and Edenbridge. Our RF bus will be supplied by Roger Wright and Wesley Tierney of the London Bus Company.
John Kateley is a former driver at Chelsham garage and sometime driver of these bus routes in the early 1970s. Ray Stenning grew up in the area where these three routes operated during 1950s, 60s and early 70s. John remembers the café in Oxted, which the drivers used for their breaks, and turning at the end of route 485 in the small Maidstone and District bus garage at Edenbridge. Ray remembers his childhood and teenage years travelling on these routes to and from his home and school.
The day’s programme will be as follows:
We will join our bus and tour leaders for the day at Oxted station at approximately at 10.45 where there will be time for short comfort break before departure. Please travel to Oxted by train. Trains leave Victoria at 09.20, arriving at Oxted at 10.01; or at 09.50, arriving at Oxted 10.31. There is also a train leaving London Bridge at 10.07, arriving at Oxted at 10.35.
Your itinerary includes:
We will also spend time at Chartwell, the famous home of Sir Winston Churchill and his family, for afternoon tea, with an informative talk given by a Chartwell guide. After our afternoon tea at Chartwell and further photo opportunity, we will return to Oxted for the journey homeward by train at around 16.30.
Trains leave Oxted every 30 minutes for Victoria and every hour to London Bridge.
Please state any dietary requirements when booking. ATTC will try to accommodate these, in conjunction with Chartwell and its catering department.
