50 years of Railway Life in Britain and Ireland

 

The London Transport Museum Friends and Friends of the National Railway Museum South of England Group have arranged another joint meeting to be held at 14:00 on Tuesday 6 October at the Abbey Centre in London. Members of LTMf and FNRM are warmly invited to attend.

 

Dick Fearn has over 50 years of experience in leadership roles in the railway industry in Britain and Ireland, in both the public and private sectors.

After joining British Rail in 1973, he held a range of operations posts throughout the network, including management roles in BR’s Freight, Provincial and Network SouthEast business sectors.

With rail privatisation in 1994, Dick became Managing Director of the South Eastern train operating company, subsequently moving to Railtrack/Network Rail as Director of the company’s North West Zone and later the Midlands Zone.

For 10 years, from 2003 to 2013, Dick held senior executive roles with Iarnród Éireann/Irish Rail, the national railway company of the Republic of Ireland. He was initially Chief Operating Officer of the company and was subsequently appointed Chief Executive in 2006, a post he held for a further seven years.

Having retired from full-time executive responsibilities, Dick continued, on his return from Ireland, to offer his experience on a part-time basis. His non-executive roles have included Chair of Network Rail’s Western Route Supervisory Board and member of the Critical Expert Panel for the Williams Rail Review.

On a voluntary basis, Dick also chaired the Board of Bluebell Railway plc from 2014–2019, and since 2018 he has been the Honorary President of the Irish Railway Record Society.
