Our original speaker, Colin Flack, is unavailable on 9th March so Gary Mewis has agreed to step in.
Gary has worked extensively in the rail industry in a variety of operational roles from 1979 until July 2024 which include London Underground, Eurotunnel, International rail rolling stock commissioning consultancy in the UK, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Greece, France and Ireland.
This illustrated talk will address, through railway operational examples, some of the extraordinary differences between operating practices within TfL/Underground/Overground and the GB main line railway. Gary will illustrate with both practical details and with candid personal observations and experiences.
The central premise is to highlight what challenges TfL faces with operating main line train services when it doesn’t have the same operating culture or logistical integrity. What are the critical factors which TfL must take into account when effectively acting as a Train Operating Company outside of its own infrastructure.
There is a special focus on London Overground as the prime example, and understanding the importance of differing railway cultures. The talk will conclude with a look at what the next phases ofTfL devolved rail services might be and what critical operational issues these will have to face.
Join Gary in the Cubic Theatre at the London Transport Museum on Monday 9th March at 18:15.
