A celebration of a hundred years of British Bus Maps in two parts.
For over a century, from the LGOC maps of the 1910s until the final TfL maps of 2016, many different styles of bus maps have been produced, to promote travel by bus (and tram and coach). Over that period huge social, political and technological changes have impacted bus services and their passengers.
In this talk John Davies will look at how the British bus industry responded to such challenges as nationalisation, privatisation and deregulation; and how the mapmakers have conveyed complex networks in an easily-understood and attractive format to give passengers the confidence to travel.
The emergence of GPS-based technology in recent years has brought about the near-extinction of the traditional paper map and we conclude by considering what has been gained and what lost in the transition from maps to apps.
(Part two of this talk will take place on Monday 12th October at Covent Garden)
