Docklands Light Railway tour

The visit will feature a guided tour by special train over the complete Docklands Light Railway network, including a visit to the maintenance facility at Beckton Depot. The day will finish with a round trip on the Emirates Skyway which also comes under the DLR umbrella.

The DLR was opened by the Queen on 31st August 1987. Then, it was just eight miles of track with 15 stations, operated by fully automated trains under the supervision of an on-board train captain. Today, the system covers 25 miles, with 45 stations; the trains operate out of depots at Poplar and Beckton.

On the drawing board are possible extensions to Dagenham Dock and Rainham, with the possibility of another crossing under the river to Thamesmead and Abbey Wood for connections to Crossrail. Serco and DLR hosts will talk more about that on the tour.

Scheduled for Saturday 26th July 2014. The cost per person is £20, to include a donation to the DLR chosen charity: Whizz Kids,. Here’s the full itinerary:

1000      Meet at Tower Gateway Station

1032      The special train will depart and run direct to Lewisham, arriving at 1058  Time for photos        

1105      The train will leave Lewisham, running via Canary Warf and Stratford to Pudding Mill Lane

1133      Arrive at Pudding Hill Lane  Time for photos     

1152      Depart Pudding Mill Lane for Poplar     

1154      Depart Poplar for Woolwich Arsenal, arriving at 1212

1215      Depart Woolwich Arsenal for Stratford International, arriving at 1241

1247      Depart Stratford International for Beckton Depot, arriving at 1310

1310      Lunch Break (bring your own) followed by tour of the depot and control centre

1600      Depart direct to Royal Victoria Station, where the tour on the DLR finishes.

Join the Emirates Skyline for a round trip, after which participants can return to Tower Gateway on their ticket, or make their own way home.

Souvenir Tickets will be posted out on 1st June and a copy of the working timetable will be handed to all participants on boarding the train.
