THE POSTAL MUSEUM AND MAILRAIL

THE POSTAL MUSEUM AND MAILRAIL

In 1927 the world’s first electrified driverless railway opened. Its purpose was to move the nation’s post across the capital, connecting London sorting offices with two of London’s railway termini. For the next 76 years Mail Rail, as it came to be known, continued to perform that same function until it was moth-balled in 2003.

Chris Taft, historian and Head of Collections at The Postal Museum, will deliver an illustrated talk which will explore the development, design, construction and operation of the railway. Chris will be joined by Hannah Gledhill, Project Manager at the Postal Museum, who will present their exciting plans to open a new postal museum with an immersive train ride through the Mail Rail tunnels. The Postal Museum in Clerkenwell is due to open to visitors in Spring 2017.
