The Story of New South Wales Railways

The Story of New South Wales Railways

From the early days of the NSW railways in the 19th Century, Rob Mason will talk about the challenges of the topography crossing the Blue Mountains (the Zig Zag railway) and the extensions into the arable plains of the interior and outback,  The challenges of drought and flood and starvation.

The presentation will include plenty of stories about the mid 1900’s steam trains and the early Ghan service from Adelaide to Alice Springs.  The reliability issues in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. The death of the second biggest tram network in the Commonwealth (after London) and the reinvention of the Light rail system in Sydney, the new driverless Metro system.  Finally, the size of the freight task in Australia and the 2.2 km automatic driverless iron ore trains of Western Australia.

Join Rob in the Cubic Theatre at the London Transport Museum on Monday 10th June at 18:15.
